WAMEGO, Jan. 5 -- Wamego police officers and Pottawatomie County deputies responded to a reported shooting this morning, according to a press release from Police Chief Mike Baker.

The report said that at approximately 8:22 a.m., the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from the residence at Lot 8, 105 East Valley, in Wamego, in reference to an adult female being shot. Police officers and sheriff's deputies responded.

Upon arrival, a 31-year-old female was found to be suffering from a gunshot to the upper chest area. She was taken to Stormont-Vail in Topeka in critical condition by the Pottawatomie County EMS.

According to the release, the incident is in the preliminary stages of investigation, and evidence indicates a juvenile child residing in the home discharged a handgun, accidently striking the adult.

Baker concluded with results of the investigation will be sent to the Pottawatomie County Attorney's office for review.

At this time, no further information was available.
