MLB All-Star supports athletes with intellectual disabilities
Mission, KS – Kansas City Royals and MLS All-Star Whit Merrifield will meet fans and sign autographs on August 17, as part of a fundraiser for Special Olympics Kansas (SOKS).
Merrifield will be at the SOKS headquarters in Mission, KS, from 10 a.m. to noon.
“To have Whit come to our office and help raise money so our athletes can participate in year-round sports means so much to us,” Heather Waters, SOKS spokesperson said. “He is such an icon in our community and shares the same passion for sport that our athletes have.”
Merrifield has participated in other events for SOKS like the Royals Charity Golf Tournament and Royals Special Olympics Clinic at Kauffman Stadium.
Special Olympics Kansas is a non-profit organization offering training and competition to individuals with intellectual disabilities in 20 Olympic type sports throughout the year.
The major source of revenue for SOKS is fundraising.
“We depend on fundraisers like this to be able to serve our athletes at no charge to them,” Waters said. “Without community partnerships and support we wouldn’t be able to support our athletes in the way we need.”
Besides sports training and competition, SOKS also provides athletes with health and wellness programs, health screenings, and leadership programs all at no charge to the athletes.
All fans who purchase a ticket for the event by August 15 will meet Merrifield and receive a limited edition 8x10 photograph to be signed at the event. Fans can also purchase and upgrade ticket which will allow them to have a personal item signed as well.
Proceeds from the event will go to Special Olympics Kansas.
SOKS headquarters is located at 5280 Foxridge Drive, Mission, KS.
