James Roy (Jim) Simmons 72 Danville, passed away Feb. 13th 2019 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Jim was born October 19, 1946 in St. Petersburg , Fla. to Lee Roy Simmons and Charlotte Jones Simmons. Jim was known by his family as “Butch.”
He attended schools in Georgia and Florida.
Jim joined the United States Army in 1968. He was stationed in Korea and also served in the Vietnam War. Upon his return he was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kan., until his honorable discharge in 1975. After his military service he was a police officer for the Wamego Police Department. Jim managed New Horizons for several years, and sold cars at Dick Edwards Ford. Most recently he worked for Wal-Mart in Wichita.
Jim has been a member of the Arab Shrine Temple.
Jim was married to Mary Zimmerman of Wichita at the time of his death, she survives of the home. From his previous marriages he is survived by three children. A daughter, Rael Simmons Blackburn of Manhattan, and two sons, Adam Simmons (Tamara) of Hutchinson, and TJ Simmons of St. Marys, as well as four stepsons, one grandson and four granddaughters, two great grandchildren , 14 step grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Ann Rose of Colo. and Martha Cummin of W. Va.; half-brother Rick Yoakum (Diann) of Omaha, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Charlotte (Tiny) Dooley Kistler of Douglasville, Ga. and Ester Simmons an infant.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a graveside service 11 a.m., Monday, March 25, 2019 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley located at 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd in Manhattan.
