Nila Elaine Haefner

Nila Elaine Haefner, 81, of Wheaton, Kansas, died Nov. 7, 2019, at the Onaga Community Hospital.  She was a life-long member of the community.

Nila was born on Sept. 28, 1938, on the family farm north east of Wheaton, the daughter of Henry and Hilda Abitz Kufahl.  She attended elementary school at St. Paul's Lutheran in Duluth and graduated from Wheaton Rural High School in 1956.  She then attended a Business and Secretarial School in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Nila was first and foremost a homemaker and loved caring for her family.  Her love for children was an integral part of her life, and she provided day-care in her home.  Nila and Ernie were foster parents for many years. Nila also worked for two years for Farm Bureau Insurance Company as a secretary, she also worked in the printing material department at the ALCO corporate office in Abilene.

Nila loved quilting and sewing. She won many awards for her quilts at the Pottawatomie County Fair.  She enjoyed gardening, canning and reading. Nila was an enthusiastic K-State sports fan. She and her family attended many KSU Football games, and also traveled to a number of bowl games.  Nila and Ernie loved taking their grandchildren to watch Wildcat Women's Basketball games.  Nila was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. She served in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and was the Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She also served as the church organist and played for many weddings and funerals.  Nila was a member of the Sunflower Club.

Nila married Ernest Otto Haefner on June 2, 1957 at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton.  He survives.

Nila is also survived by her children; Curtis Haefner (Lori), Onaga, Kari Kufahl (Randy), Wheaton, and Kevin Haefner (Lisa) DeSoto; her siblings, Orlene Krohn, Blaine, Ardell Kufahl (Arlene), Wheaton, Delbert Kufahl, Onaga, and Don Kufahl (Margie), Hoyt; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.  Nila was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton.  Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Luke Lutheran North Cemetery.  Nila will lie-in-state, on Monday, at the church, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.  They suggest memorial contributions to St. Luke Lutheran Church, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Kufahl Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be made at www.campanellafuneral.com.
